| Available three letter names. A rough guess for the last name to be taken is early may 2012. |
I wrote a primitive crawler (all hail to lynx! [edit and curl !] ) which could give answer.
Including digits (0-9) and the underscore ('_') there are about 37^3 = 50653 names available (theoretically).
[July 05] : As far as i know, now all names are taken. Maybe there is a chance about getting the accounts that are banned due to abuse at some point, but i don't know twitters policy about that. That are about 1400, but the API prevents direct requests about suspended users (Maybe i fiddle it out some time).

Nice post, i get the last 5 accounts 3 letters in your list, there is some tool to find available usernames in twitter or how you find this usernames because i was looking in all the web and only find your information, thank you.
ReplyDeleteGreat work
well, you simply can have a look at https://dev.twitter.com/docs . The scripting task is just to automatize the api requests and make a reasonable data analysis.
ReplyDeleteI will not publish my script here as it is a very ugly hack and i don't want to encourage bad programming habits.
I signed up for Twitter in 2007. I had a 3-letter username (RBA). I haven't twitted much (4-5 tweets in all these years), but my account was kept active. Early this year, "someone" changed my username to ReallyBadActing and someone took over the RBA username. Ever since, that username has changed hands three times that I could tell. Just so you know that somehow, these names sometimes are also STOLEN and Twitter won't do a thing about it.
ReplyDeleteI had @7z9 a couple of months ago then I got bored of it and changed it back to my normal name, and now it's taken ..
ReplyDeleteI have @lmg
ReplyDeletewhat do you want for that twitter handle @img
